The Love of Christ Compels Us…

“For the love of Christ compels us…” 2 Corinthians 5:14

As we prepared to open Cosette’s Hope Children’s Home (CHCH) in 2005, we were asked a pointed question, one meant to challenge and perhaps even stop us: “Do you feel called to orphanage work?”

John’s answer was, “No, I don’t feel called to do this.  I feel compelled.”

Though we were acting under compulsion, ours was not a hesitant, reluctant response to an unwelcome command, nor was it an irrational response to an emotional situation.  An external circumstance (the needs of Cambodia’s orphaned children) coupled with holy conviction (the Word of God) created an urgent, internal, love-driven compulsion to DO SOMETHING.

There had been no gentle leading, no quiet voice calling us.  Instead there had been an overwhelming and undeniable sense of something that must be done.  It was no private, mystical call that brought us to open CHCH but rather the bold, practical teaching of the Lord in His word: “Whoever receives one little child like this in My name receives Me.”

Through the years we have had moments – even seasons – of weariness, questioning, and doubting.  But the compulsion – the internal love of Christ in us – has remained strong and sure.

When we feel like we can’t go on, we know with certainty that we can’t NOT go on.

He remains faithful, and we, by His grace, endeavor to do so, too.
